Greetings Grognards and Young Guard!
Playing a little catch-up this year and I wanted to take time to post some pics from a great wargaming convention, held each year on the MLK Jr weekend in Augusta, GA called 'Siege of Augusta'. This is a HMGS event.
This is a favorite of mine and a destination each year to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and totally get immersed in the wargaming hobby!
The convention is three days and packed full of games consisting of demo games from various companies, wargames tournaments and most importantly, consisting of the majority of games, those put on by fellow gamers who volunteer their time and minis to throw down.
Thanks goes to all of those who run the convention and to those who put on the games to make it happen! I'm looking forward to SOA 2026!
Below, for starters are pictures of games in which I participated over the weekend, followed by some shots of other games around the convention.
First up was a 20mm modern game set in the fictional world of WWIII in the Twilight 2000 RPG setting. The battle was to be a lead in for the final massed battle between the Warsaw Pact forces and NATO that kicks off the Twilight 2000 RPG small forces adventure. A great time was had by all. Rules used was a modified version of Force on Force.
Next up are some pictures of an excellent scenario for Pointe du Hoc, the Ranger assault on the cliffs at Normandy. What an excellent game! It was bloody, but the Rangers were able to repeat history and win the day!
Next up was a dungeon crawl game in development. The GM comes each year and puts this one on and we all try to get them to get it published! Maybe next year! Our group was the only group to escape the dungeon, but came away only with our lives!
Next was my first venture into Battletech! I was always shy of the Battletech system. I favor simple rule sets and the Battletech system always seemed too deep for me, but I had interested in the game. Luckily talking to some other con-goers and seeing the models on the table, I was able to play Battletech Alpha Strike for the first time. I'm not a fan of games that use grids or hexes, but Alpha Strike uses neither, so more the traditional wargaming feel. I found the game mechanics well done! The game flowed smoothly and the rules were easy to understand and handle in a short period of time. Everyone was very engaged! The game is both tactical and action packed. If you have not tried it, I recommend give it a shot.
Last game of the weekend was a 'Starship Trooper/ Aliens' style scenario, with 15mm miniatures. The Scientific expedition had mined too deeply and had awaken the Aliens below. The Aliens clamored to the surface to exterminate the humans, while the humans tried to escape off the board to reach their ships.
Below are pictures some of of the Kings of War Tournament armies.
Next up...a 54mm set-up of US Marines vs. Japanese somewhere in the South Pacific! Just love seeing the big figures painted and used on the table top! Check some of my own posts for my AWI and ACW 54mm figures.
Once again, there was some action in the 'vills and rice patties' with Charlie Company, Vietnam wargames rules.
Also, some middle eastern modern action, with black hawks and Americans!
This Victorian battle on Mars was spectacular! Martian red sands and flying machines!
Well, hope you enjoyed the pictures and got a true sense of the varied offerings of a wargaming convention. SOA is just an awesome event! If you have never been to a convention, I highly recommend you go. Take some friends or go and meet new ones! You won't be sorry you did!
Until next time...GAME ON!
